FAQ

Credit note questions, answered

What is a credit note?

A credit note is a document that reduces the amount a customer owes on an invoice you have already issued. You raise one when goods come back, a service is cancelled, you have overcharged, or you agree a discount after the fact. It corrects the record without deleting or editing the original invoice.

When should I issue a credit note instead of editing the invoice?

Once an invoice has been sent to a customer or reported in a GST return, you should not change it. Issue a credit note instead. It leaves the original in place and records the correction as a separate, dated document, which is what your accountant and the tax rules expect.

Is a credit note the same as a refund?

No. A credit note is the paperwork that records the adjustment. A refund is the money moving back. You can raise a credit note and refund the customer, or raise one and leave the balance on their account to reduce a future invoice. Pinvoice supports both.

Are credit notes GST-compliant in Pinvoice?

Yes. Each credit note reverses the tax in the same split as the original invoice, keeps the HSN or SAC codes, and carries its own sequential number and date. The data exports GSTR-1 ready, so your return reflects the corrections you made.

Can I credit only part of an invoice?

Yes. Credit a single line, a few lines, or the full invoice. Pinvoice recalculates the taxable value and the tax on whatever you choose, so partial returns and price corrections are as simple as full cancellations.

Is credit note software really free?

Yes. Credit notes are part of Pinvoice at no cost, with no cap on how many you raise, no per-document fee and no credit card needed to start.
