The arithmetic
How to calculate markup
Work forwards from cost to price, then check the margin it actually leaves you.
Selling price from markup
Price = cost × (1 + markup ÷ 100)
A ₹700 cost with 40% markup gives a ₹980 selling price and ₹280 profit.
The margin it produces
Margin % = (price − cost) ÷ price × 100
That same 40% markup is only a 28.6% margin. Always check the margin before committing to a markup.
FAQ
Markup questions, answered
How do I calculate markup?
Multiply your cost by one plus the markup percentage. A ₹700 cost with a 40 per cent markup gives a selling price of ₹980. The calculator does it as you type and shows the resulting margin too.
Why does my markup not equal my margin?
Because they are measured against different things. Markup is on cost, margin is on the selling price, so markup is always the larger number. A 40 per cent markup is only about a 28.6 per cent margin, which is why pricing by markup alone can quietly disappoint.
What markup should I use?
Enough to cover your overheads and leave a profit, which depends on your trade and volume. Work backwards from the margin you need rather than picking a round number, and the calculator will show you what markup delivers it.
Should markup be applied before or after GST?
Before. Work out your selling price on the cost excluding tax, then add GST on top at the appropriate slab. Marking up a tax-inclusive figure inflates the price without increasing what you keep.
Is my data stored?
No. Everything is calculated in your browser and nothing is sent to us or saved.
Can I apply markup across all my items?
Save each item in Pinvoice with its cost and selling price and the margin is visible per item, so repricing is a review of real numbers rather than a spreadsheet exercise. It is free.
